Winter 2021

Goodbye to a very tough year

By Anna DeBattiste

I haven’t met anyone who loved 2020, for obvious reasons. But we do have a few things to be grateful for. Many of us work in industries that were considered essential, and for the construction industry in New England, it appeared that a lot of you were even busier than usual. I haven’t found any data to back that up, I just know that I couldn’t get a lot of you on the phone no matter what I did. Just kidding. Many of you told me you were busier, and that’s a good thing. There has to be some positive news in all the tragedy we suffered in 2020. For those of you who can’t see the light at the end of the tunnel yet, here is my Covid vaccine card, and I hope it gives you a glimpse. As a first responder (I volunteer for a mountain rescue team) I got my first vaccination on December 26th. I’ll get my second and final one on January 23rd.

Another item in the positive category, for those of you working in office jobs, is that it appears our world may be changing for the long-term. We’ve learned we can do our jobs from home. We’ve also learned, however, that teamwork suffers when we never see each other face-to-face. Workplaces of the future may have more hybrid schedules and more creative options. Travel may decrease, work-life balance efforts may increase. I know for me, my road warrior days may be over. After I finished being sorry that I would lose my frequent flyer status on United Airlines, I started to see the upside.

As the new year begins, I hope you’re all thinking about the good things coming and leaving the bad memories behind. I know I am, and I wish you all the very best in 2021.
