  NCCER Revamps Exam Categories

As of May 1st, NCCER has a new and simplified exam category chart. The new version is more streamlined than the old version, and includes the following categories:

  • Boom truck
  • Telescopic boom
  • Lattice boom
  • Industrial/carry deck
  • Service truck
  • Articulating boom crane
  • Features of the changes include:
  • Each crane type now has one dedicated written assessment and one practical exam
  • Operators are tested only on what’s relevant to their machine
  • No more 180-day renewal requirement; you can recertify anytime you like up to five years from your expiration date

For operators who run multiple crane types, you will need to decide how you want their certification to read based on NCCER’s new matrix.

Summer Heat, Heavy Loads: Operating in Extreme Conditions

Summer is coming!  Here are some warm weather considerations for operators and construction managers.

      • In extreme heat, watch for dehydration and fatigue.  Make sure workers have access to plenty of water.
      • Watch the forecast daily; will lightning hazard be a consideration for your operations today?
      • Watch for ground stability considerations on unpaved surfaces after significant rainfall, and on paved surfaces after periods of extreme heat
      • Make sure you have adequate support under outrigger pads
      • Pay attention to equipment cooling systems and ensure they are working properly when you most need them
